Students who take more than one Winter session (September-April) to complete their First Year program requirements are referred to as Continuing First Year students. This page is meant to aid you in course planning and registration for your second winter session as a first year student.
Course Planning
At the end of the 2022 Winter Session (September 2022-April 2023), BASc students were assigned an Academic Standing: Good Standing, Academic Probation and Failed Year. Students who received 60% and above, but did not meet Year 2 promotion requirements in the 2022 Winter Session are considered Continuing First Year students. If a student, at the end of the 2022 Winter Session, was assigned either Academic Probation or were permitted to continue after being assigned a Failed Year, they must follow the conditions outlined in their letter and complete the specific planning documents sent to them, however, they are welcome to use this page to inform their course planning.
As a Continuing First Year student, you will need to design a course plan for the 2023 Winter Session (September 2023-April 2024).
Note: Although this page provides course planning information, Continuing First Year students are required to fill out the course planning document and attend an academic advising appointment with EAS before registration. This appointment will ensure that your course plan is balanced, well thought out, and provides you with the courses you need to be eligible for Second Year Placement.
Course Plan Expectations and Guidelines
You are required to have a minimum of 24 credits* in your continuing year to be considered for Second Year Placement. When making a course plan, you should consider:
- All First Year Program courses that you have not yet completed before considering which additional courses to take.
- BASc complimentary study courses: humanities electives and/or the Impact requirement
- Common upper year Engineering courses
When planning these courses, you should consider which programs you are hoping to be placed in. As the engineering programs at UBC are highly specialized, there are no courses that are common between all programs. For this reason, you will need to decide which programs you are aiming for if you plan on registering for common upper year courses.
After considering those three areas, if you are still looking for courses to take: consider what additional courses may be of interest to you If you are intending on pursuing a minor, you may also consider taking some courses toward your minor during your continuing year. Please refer to our Minors page for more information.
Please note: there can be risk in taking common upper year courses, as you may be placed in a program that does not use that course. Please speak to an EAS advisor if you would like to discuss this further.
*If you are registered with the Centre for Accessibility and have an approved reduced course load for 2023 Winter Session, please email us at students@apsc.ubc.ca by August 15, 2023, to let us know as this condition above may be adjusted for you.

Humanities or Social Science Elective | 3 | One course totalling 3 credits of a humanities and social science elective. This is a non-scientific and non-technical course that is generally found in the Faculty of Arts. It is recommended that you select a 100-level course. If you are intending to pursue a minor in your third year, consider taking courses that might be applicable to the minor program. Please see Complementary Studies for further details and exceptions. |
Complementary Studies Courses
Humanities
Engineering students are required to take 6 credits of humanities during their degree, with 3 credits taken in the first year, and 3 credits taken during an upper year. You may choose to do your second humanities course during your continuing first year to fill out your schedule.
Technical Communication
If you have already completed WRDS 150B or equivalent, you may want to consider taking your Technical Communications course. Although most programs have their own version of the second-year Technical Communications course, some programs may allow APSC 201 to be used for the requirement if taken before placement occurs.
If you would like to explore this option, please speak to an EAS advisor for more information about which programs will accept APSC 201.
Impact Course
BASc students must take a 3 credit complimentary course on the impacts of technology on society, sustainable development and environment stewardship or Impact for short. Most Engineering programs allow students to pick an option from the general list of Impact courses to satisfy this requirement. However, there are a few that require a specific course. If you are considering taking an Impact course during your Continuing First Year, please consider which Engineering programs you are interested in.
If you are interested in an Engineering program that is not CHBE/CHML or ENVL, all these Engineering programs will honour an Impact course chosen from the list if it was taken before being placed in a specific program and will satisfy this requirement once a student is placed in their specific program.
If a student is interested in CHBE/CHML, please take APSC 261 or APSC 262
If a student is interested in ENVL, the impact course for this program is specific and a part of the 2nd year curriculum for this program. This impact requirement cannot be taken ahead of time.
Common Upper Year Courses
The chart below shows the courses that are common between 3 or more programs.
Please note: there can be a risk in taking common upper year courses, as you may be placed in a program that does not use that course. Please speak to an EAS advisor if you would like to discuss this further.

Summer Courses
If you would like to take courses in the summer between your First Year and Continuing First Year, please book an academic advising appointment with EAS to discuss your options.
Summer courses for Continuing First Year students are very case-by-case. Some students may benefit from taking a few of their missing first year courses in order to fulfill prerequisites for more courses to take during the Winter Session. However, some students may struggle to reach the 24-credit minimum in the Winter Session if they take summer courses.
Course Registration Instructions
As Continuing First Year students have taken some of the first-year courses, they cannot register for courses through the first year STTs. Instead, you will be required to register for each class individually on SSC. Some courses may have different registration instructions, such as registering only for the waitlist or emailing a specific contact person. For this reason, we have listed registration instructions for the most common continuing first year courses.
First Year Course Registration Instructions
APSC 100 and/or APSC 101
Students intending to take APSC 100 and/or 101 in their continuing First Year must meet with an EAS advisor to determine their eligibility for the course(s).
Once a student has confirmed their eligibility with an advisor, they can register on the waitlist and will be added to the course if space permits.
APSC 160
Students should register for the waitlist. EAS will begin moving students off the waitlist in August, depending on seat availability. Please contact us with any questions.
CHEM 154
Students should register for the waitlist. Please contact the Chemistry Department with any questions.
MATH 100, 101
Students should register for the waitlist. Please contact the Math Department with any questions.
MATH 152
Students should register for the internal EAS MATH 152 waitlist, as there is no waitlist section on SSC. EAS will begin moving students off the waitlist in late July.
PHYS 157, 158, 159 and 170
Students should register for the waitlist. Please contact physics at ugcoord@physics.ubc.ca.ca with any questions.
Complementary Studies Registration Instructions
Humanities Requirement
You will register for humanities courses as usual, by registering for specific sections. If seats are full, register on the waitlist if available, or monitor SSC for open seats. If the course is restricted or blocked, check the section notes on SSC, or contact the Arts program department that runs the course for more information.
Check individual courses for prerequisites.
Check the Humanities and Social Sciences Requirement page to ensure your intended humanities course is approved.
Technical Communications Requirement
Please ensure you have first spoken to an EAS advisor to confirm APSC 201 will be applicable to your desired placement.
Prerequisites: One of ENGL 110, 111, 112, WRDS 150B
How to register: please register through the waitlist for APSC 201. The waitlists will be cleared later in the summer.
Impact Requirement
Please ensure you have first spoken to an EAS advisor to confirm, which impact course will be best for you and your desired placement.
How to register: Some of the Impact courses have general seats and others have waitlists. If you are able to register into the course or waitlist, please do so. If the course does not have general seats nor a waitlist, please email the department the course is administrated by (ie CIVL 250 would be through the CIVL department). If you have trouble, please contact EAS for assistance.
