Important Notes:
- A course conflict occurs when two or more classes in your schedule take place at the same time. Students are unable to register in a course where there is a conflict and will have to submit a course conflict request.
- This form is only for upper year BASc students. First year engineering students are not permitted to register in courses with a conflict.
- A completed and signed conflict form does not guarantee registration into the course. Registration is subject to seat availability and faculty (EAS) approval.
Requesting a Course Conflict
Students should avoid course conflicts where possible. Before submitting a form to EAS, take the following steps to remove any conflicts:
- Check for alternate sections (lecture/lab/discussions) that do not have a conflict and register or add yourself to the waitlist
- For technical and humanities electives, choose an alternate course or section that does not conflict with your current courses
If a course conflict is unavoidable (no alternative sections or substitute courses), you must get approval from all course instructors, except for pre-approved courses listed below.
Register yourself in the course most important to your academic plan while your request is processed to secure your spot. If the conflict is between an APSC and a non-APSC course, register in the non-APSC course first to help speed up processing.
Please note that if your request is approved, you cannot request academic concessions for either conflicting course.
Process and Eligibility
To request a course conflict registration, complete these steps before submitting:
- Download and fully complete the APSC Course Conflict form from the EAS website
- Check Term 1 and Term 2 sections for potential conflicts
- List all requested sections (lecture, lab, discussion)
- Confirm that you meet all pre/co-requisites for the requested course. If not, obtain instructor permission on the form.
- Provide a detailed conflict management plan for all courses
- Obtain all instructor signatures — on the same form (preferred) or two separate, fully completed forms (see pre-approved courses for a list of exceptions). Instructor email approval will be accepted in lieu of a signed form.
- Sign the student agreement at the bottom
- Submit fully signed and completed form(s) to EAS for processing
Note: If your preferred section is full, we will place you in another open section that fits your timetable. If the course is full, you will be placed on the waitlist.
Conflicts will be declined by EAS in the following situations:
- If alternative non-conflicting course sections are available
- If the conflict is with a first year engineering course
- Any MATH courses are included in the conflict
Students with conflicts in the following situations may be referred to meet with an advisor before the conflict is processed:
- Third attempts at a course
- Students on Academic Probation or with a standing of Failed or Permitted to Continue
- Students with multiple conflict requests in a single term
