Below is common advice that may be helpful if you find yourself with an incomplete or failed course. If you require a more in-depth conversation we encourage you to book an appointment with an Academic Advisor.
CHEM 121
If you have been granted a standing deferred exam for CHEM 121 you will want to consult the UBC Science Deferred Exam Schedule for your exam writing date. Your eligibility to take CHEM 123 in term 2 will be determined once the results of your standing deferred exam are available.
Some term 1 SD exams for courses offered by the Faculty of Science will be written during the first week of classes in January. It is your responsibility to know when your exam is scheduled. If you miss your exam you will not be granted an extension.
If you failed CHEM 121 you will not be permitted to continue with CHEM 123 in term 2. CHEM 123 will be dropped from your registration. CHEM 123 is typically offered in the summer session. Summer course schedules are posted in mid-February.
CHEM 154
If you failed CHEM 154 the earliest opportunity to re-take the course will be the following winter session in term 1. Alternatively, you can cover CHEM 154 by taking both CHEM 121 and CHEM 123. CHEM 121 and CHEM 123 are typically offered in the summer session.
MATH 100
If you have been granted a standing deferred exam for MATH 100, and you were passing the course prior to the final exam, you will be permitted to continue with MATH 101 and MATH 152 in term 2 with the discretion of the Math department. Students are encouraged to consult the Math Department for further information.
If you failed Math 100 in term 1, you will be dropped from MATH 101 by the Math department. You may be permitted to stay registered in MATH 152 based on your final grade in MATH 100 at the discretion of the Math department. The rest of your courses in term 2 will likely not be impacted without Math 100. It is your responsibility to ensure you meet the pre- or co-requisites of any courses you are registered for.
Math 100 and Math 101 are pre-requisites for most engineering second-year courses and it is highly recommended that you complete them in the summer term. Math 100 is typically offered in summer term 1. Math 101 is typically offered in summer term 2. Summer course schedules are posted in mid-February.
PHYS 157
If you failed PHYS 157 you will not be permitted to continue with PHYS 158 in term 2. PHYS 158 will be dropped from your registration. You will be allowed to continue with PHYS 159.
You may register in PHYS 157/201 and T2A offered in term 2. These courses will only be available to students who failed the course in term 1. Contact ug-coord@phas.ubc.ca if PHYS 157/201 or T2A conflicts with PHYS 159. If you do not complete PHYS 157 in the winter session you will be permitted to register in PHYS 117 to cover PHYS 157. PHYS 117 is typically offered in summer term 1. You will also be permitted to register for PHYS 118 in the summer session to cover the PHYS 158 requirement. Summer course schedules are posted in mid-February.
Students who have completed PHYS 12 or the equivalent are eligible to keep PHYS 170 in Term 2, even if they have failed PHYS 157.
