Is it possible to get a same-day appointment?

Students can book appointments using the Patient Portal. However, usually, the soonest appointment on the portal is months away.

Booking same day appointments is possible by calling the clinic at 604 822 7011. The menu is long, and often students are confused about which extension to dial. They have to dial “0” in order to talk to the receptionist and to book a same-day appointment.

Students are advised to call as early as possible 8:15 a.m. in order to get a same-day spot. Keep in mind that on Thursdays the Clinic has a team meeting and will be accepting calls starting from 9:00 a.m. as an exception.

Can the students get a diagnosis at the UBC Student Health Service at the UBC Hospital (Including Mental Health)?

Students can get a diagnosis at the UBC Clinic.

Note: Nurse practitioners are not able to make Mental Health/ADHD Assessments. If you are talking with a student in need of a Mental Health/ADHD Assessment please refer them to the UBC Student Health Service at the UBC Hospital and not the Orchard Commons Clinics.  

Is it possible to get a family doctor/physician at the UBC Student Health Service at the UBC Hospital?

No, however, students are welcome to see and follow up with the same doctor.

Each doctor has special spots to book follow-up appointments with previous patients.

What is the procedure for the students to get a Mental Health/ADHD Assessment?

The student who is in need of a Mental Health/ ADHD Assessment has to visit a Wellness Advisor first.

Once the Wellness Advisor makes the referral, the student can book an appointment with the UBC Student Health Service at the UBC Hospital to get assessed.

Is it possible to get a doctor’s note to be used in Academic Concessions?

Yes. In some cases, the doctor’s note can be given to a student with an additional charge. However, receiving a doctor’s note for academic-related purposes is free of charge.

Can the students visit the Emergency Service at the UBC Hospital if the clinic no longer has same-day appointments?

If a student goes to Urgent Care because there are no appointments available at the UBC Clinic, they might get a referral from UBC Urgent Care to the UBC Clinic.

The UBC Clinic will actually have 4-5 emergency appointments called the “ED” appointments (Stands for Emergency Department).

Once the student is referred from the Urgent Care to the Clinic, they can meet with a practitioner there.

This situation is only applicable to the UBC Clinic’s work hours which are 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Outside of the clinic hours, the students can wait to see the Urgent Care/Primary Care at the UBC Hospital or another Hospital near their location.

Do the referrals happen with the doctors at UBC Hospital or outside of UBC Hospital?

The student first needs to book a same-day phone call/Patient Portal appointment.

After the appointment, the doctor can make a referral to a specialist.

There are various specialists at UBC (Dermatologist, Pulmonologist), and the student’s specialist appointment might be in the UBC Hospital.

However, if the type of specialist at UBC Hospital does not exist, or if there are capacity concerns the student can also be directed to a specialist outside of the UBC Hospital.

Can the students cancel or change their appointment at the UBC Student Health Service at the UBC Hospital?

Yes, please make sure to cancel or change your appointment a minimum of 2 hours before on the Patient Portal or by phone at 604 484 2209 or 604 822 7689 for psychiatry appointments.

If you are unable to cancel or change your appointment you will be charged a cancellation fee.

What are some of the additional services at the UBC Student Health Service at UBC Hospital?

Nurse PAP Clinic at UBC Student Health Service Hospital Location- Wednesday

  • This is a 40-minute appointment to see a Registered Nurse for a Pap Test.
  • Bookable either by a doctor or a nurse practitioner.
  • The appointments are available only on Wednesdays.

Nurse STI Clinic at UBC Student Health Service Hospital Location – Thursday

  • This is a 20-minute appointment with a Registered Nurse for sexual health/STI-related concerns only.
  • These appointments are available only on Thursdays.

Otherwise, please call to see if there is a same-day appointment the rest of the days in the week, although the usually the next appointments are weeks away.

Can the students get a diagnosis/prescription at the UBC Student Health Service at Orchard Commons (Including Mental Health)?

The nurse practitioners and the doctors at the UBC Student Health Service at Orchard Commons can diagnose and prescribe illnesses including mental health (the only exception is that the nurse practitioners are unable to diagnose or prescribe ADHD concerns).

For mental health concerns, if this is the first occurrence of the illness, they have to be referred by UBC Counselling Services. Once they have a referral from UBC Counselling Services, they can choose the option is “Appointment referred by UBC Counselling Services” on the Patient Portal. If the student is already diagnosed and would like to meet a doctor for follow-up or prescriptions they can directly book with UBC Student Health Service at Orchard Commons.

Is it possible to get a family doctor/physician at the UBC Student Health Service at Orchard Commons?

There are no family doctors, however, students are encouraged to follow up with the same practitioners each time for consistency.

What is the procedure for the students to get a Mental Health/ADHD Assessment?

If this is their first time concern for mental health , they need to be referred by the UBC Counselling Services.

The students can seek mental health related concerns from nurse practitioners, however they need to consult with a doctor for ADHD concerns because it involves stimulant prescriptions.

If they are booking for an ADHD Assessment, their appointment may be moved to a different provider, date and time based on the availability of the doctors on the clinic.

Is it possible to get a doctor’s note to be used in Academic Concessions?

It is possible to get a doctor’s note.

However, note that there is no eligible criteria to receive the note. The note can be backdated as well as can be given after phone appointments. The notes depend on the specific doctor’s discretion.

What is the difference between Saturday, Monday, and Friday Clinics and the other days?

Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays it is possible to book same day appointments. Booking is available starting from the day before.

Additionally, there will be doctors on site on Friday and Saturdays, and the rest of the days there will be only nurse practitioners.

What is the difference between a regular practitioner and vs nurse practitioner at the UBC Student Health Service at Orchard Commons?

The nurse practitioners at the Orchard Commons Clinic are only not able to assess Mental Health Concerns that require stimulants as treatment (Such as ADHD).

If the student will visit the Orchard Common’s clinic for a Mental Health assessment that might result in a stimulant prescription, please advise them to visit during Fridays and Saturdays or the UBC Health Service at UBC Hospital any day.
